By training and occupation, Edith Patch was one of the world’s foremost entomologists. She was the premier “bug lady” of her time, a serious scientist who contributed hundreds of papers to her field and who eventually became the first-ever-woman President of the Entomological Society of America.

She was, also, a scientist who wanted to excite children’s interest and enthusiasm in natural history by writing engaging stories about the many creatures she had studied and had come to value.

She often said that her stories were designed for “younger” elementary-aged children.

 Yet, a century later, we find a consummate naturalist with the voice of a poet whose work resonates particularly well with the ethos of our own time.

Most certainly not just for children!
