El Duelo de los fantasma muertos

~ The Duel of the Ghosts ~

Situation

In 1335, King Alfonso XI of Castile created two independent military orders of Spanish Knights (Caballeros), the Order of the Gold Band, represented by a golden band across a red field, and the Order of the Scale, represented by a golden cross on a blue field. Over time, these two military orders became intense rivals; blue knights hated red knights, and vice versa. In the early 1700s, when the leaders of these two Orders both died within a week of each, the rivalry continued in the ghostly realm.

King Alfonso had granted each Order the right to conscript citizens into their armies. When the two leaders died less than a week apart, they continued to conscript citizens — only now instead of constripting citizens to fight in the army, they were taking the citizen’s very souls!

Play

¡El Duelo! is a card game for two players. Each player has their own deck of 40 cards. One player plays the Red Deck and one plays the Blue. Players shuffle their individual decks, and then, simultaneously, both players overturn their top card. If the two cards match, a duel ensues, and both players roll their 12-sided die. Highest value takes both cards.

Cards won from an opponent are placed in player’s Win Stack. Play continues until either player overturns a Muerto card. The “Muerto” card immediately ends play. Player with the most cards in their Win Stack triumphs.

Deck consists of:

  • 36 “Citizen” cards
  • 3 “Joker” cards
  • 1 “Muerto” (death) card.

Game lasts 15-20 minutes and is appropriate for ages 8 and above.
